Expo Pavilion Reloaded
Summer School Reuse and Rethink EXPO 2015
Since the Second World War, the neo-liberal economy has depleted our cities of resources, side stepping democratic decision-making processes and promoting spectacular events and investing in empty architectural signs. Expo's, the Olympics and other major events can be considered to be consistent episodes in this strategy, which marks the power of liquid financial flows and erases the city as a place of social commitment and involvement. We are interested in the idea of governments spending huge amounts of money to build and then demolish massive structures to host a corporate event that will only last a few months. How are communities benefiting from the Expo? Can it be considered a point of pride or regret?
By re-designing the 'temporary' wooden pavilions of Expo 2015 the summer school investigates the possibility of disassembling the Cluster structures with the aim of reassembling them in different places and ways, manipulating their spaces, parts and details. Through this very site-specific and small but critical exercise, students coming from Schools of architecture across the world will contribute to the broad political aim of the workshop, which offers a series of local authorities within the neighbourhoods of Milan the real possibility of inheriting a redesigned structure to act as a free space for public use.
